La naturaleza de las adaptaciones en la teología natural británica: análisis historiográfico y consecuencias metateóricas
Resumen
The nature of adaptations in British natural theology: a historiographical analysis and metatheoretical consecuences
In his masterpiece, Darwin clearly states what his theory is meant to explain: the origin of “exquisite adaptations.” Regarding its nature, D. Ospovat claims that for several years Darwin thought that his theory should explain the origin of perfect or optimal structures, ascribing this to the influence of some previous devote naturalists that were well known by Darwin. This contribution has two related but distinct aims: (1) historiographically, textual evidence is introduced in order to conclude, against Ospovat‘s position, that certain natural theologians whose works Darwin had red, did not (in an unrestrained way) hold the perfection of adaptations, and (2) metatheoretically, and taking into account (1) and another considerations, it is specified that the adaptations the evolutionary theory refers to (according to On the Origin of Species) are not-T-theoretical terms, being “T” the theory of evolution by natural selection.
