Alcance y límites de los modelos evolucionistas de cambio científico

Resumen

Scope and limits to the evolutionary model of scientific change

This paper analyzes the evolutionary models of scientific change, in particular the one proposed by David Hull. An analysis of the scope and limits of those models leads to the conclusion that, at best, they explain the effects, not the causes of conceptual fitness. An explanation of such causes requires philosophical, sociological and historical analysis. Therefore, evolutionary models of scientific change cannot be understood as alternatives to analyzing scientific change in terms of, for instance, epistemic values, cognitive styles, representational resources or experimentation. Only on the basis of such analysis can evolutionary models, as well as other based on invisible hand explanations, may represent the process of scientific change, avoiding to turn the naturalist program into an empty shell.

Key words: Scientific change, conceptual evolution, evolutionary models, invisible hand explanations.
