La percepción del tiempo evolutivo

The perception of evolutionary time

When teaching evolution, one of its main problems is to transmit properly the magnitude of time to students. At the beginning of our course on evolution, we tried to explore the students’ knowledge concerning evolutionary time. For this purpose, we administer a test (to be voluntarily returned after two days) containing eight questions on the concept of time in evolution. The students must answer to the assignation of the origin of the universe, the Earth, the life in our planet, the eukaryotic cell, the modern human being and others. In general, the students answered correctly to the origin of the universe, the Earth and the planet’s life. A good correlation occurs between the answers on the origin of the Earth and the origin of the life. Poor results were obtained in the rest, probably due to their particularity as evolutionary events.
