T. S. Kuhn, C. I. Lewis y el regreso epistémico: La vía no kantiana hacia los paradigmas
Resumen
T. S. Kuhn, C. I. Lewis and the epistemic regress: the non-Kantian path towards paradigms
Kant has often been considered Kuhn’s primary epistemological source; Kuhn’s work has also been interpreted as providing a non-idealistic, sociological revision of Kant’s a priori. In this paper I suggest a different interpretation. During his early intellectual development (1940-45), I argue, Kuhn dealt with Hume’s skeptical challenge, and with the epistemic regress problem, from a point of view different to Kant’s. The alternative via Kuhn found and defended was C. I. Lewis’ intensional perspective and his pragmatic a priori. In this paper I show that Kuhn followed this classic pragmatist philosopher in trying to find a solution to the above-referred problems, as well as the limits of that influence. In doing so, I examine available evidence from Kuhn’s unpublished papers, currently deposited at the MIT.
Key words: A priori, given, intensions, epistemic regress, pragmatism, Kantianism, Hume, Kant, Kuhn, Lewis, Sheffer.
